Types and Grades of Steel Bars

Steel bars are one of the most widely used construction material in the world. They are highly versatile, have tremendous strength, and are affordable. Industrial metal supply offers steel bars which are both hot rolled and cold rolled coming in various profiles and diameters. They are adaptable to various applications and are a cost-effective solution for almost all commercial and industrial products. Steel bars have some common applications in automobiles, construction, gas, renewable energy, heavy industry, and many more. Even the best TMT bars in India are generally of two types namely mild steel bars and deformed steel bars.

MILD STEEL BARS

Mild steel bars are mostly used for tensile stress of Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) slab beams and others in reinforced cement concrete work. They are usually plain in surface and have round sections of diameter. Mild steel bars are manufactured in long lengths and they are easy to cut and can be bent without causing any damage.

DEFORMED STEEL BARS

Deformed steel bars are provided with ribs, lugs, or surface deformation. They help in minimizing slippage in concrete works and increase the bond between the materials. They have higher tensile strength than mild steel bars and can be used without end hooks. The deformation is spaced along the bar at uniform distances. Deformed bars are 40 to 80 % stronger than the plain round bars of nominal size.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Generally, grade II Mild steel bars are not recommended in places which are earthquake zones and are subject to severe damage. They are also not suitable for structures which are prone to dynamic loading other than wind loading like railway areas and high bridges. Every set of mild steel bar at the worksites must undergo testing in laboratories before using them in construction worksites. However, they are used for small works on the basis of results from varying tests by manufacturers in their own laboratories. Some manufacturers like Jindal steel give certification of test and grade to the steel bars. Even the storage of steel bars is also done on the basis of grades at the sites of work.

PRECAUTIONS IN REINFORCEMENT

Steel bars are usually very clear and are free from loose scales, dust, and lose rust coats of paints, oil, and others. They reduce bond strength and destroy them completely. Steel bars are stored perfectly in a way to avoid distortion and also to prevent corrosion and deterioration. Remember not to clean the steel bars with oily substances in order to remove the rust coatings. They can also be easily bent into required shapes and sizes suiting the configurations of your needs.
