All you need to know about TMT steel

The full form of TMT is Thermo Mechanical Treatment. TMT steel is used in various applications like making sturdy reinforcement bars. When hot rolled steel is prepared, they are further processed by passing through water that allows having a hard outer surface and a softer inner core. Due to this hard outer surface, the tensile strength of the outer surface increases while the inner core retains ductility and has high elongation. Hence, the manufacturing process of TMT steel makes them more capable of withstanding stress. Additionally, TMT steel does not suffer from defects like other materials or shows signs of surface cracks as it is not passed through the deformation process.

Cutting edge technology is used to manufacture TMT bars. The ladle refining furnace method is used in this process. This helps in removing impurities such as Sulphur and Phosphorus for the metal and also adding alloying elements that will help to get the desired quality of steel grade. While Sulphurs impart hot shortness, Phosphorus imparts cold shortness in steel. This results in higher chances of brittleness, bad ductility, bendability and weldability in steel. Further, this decreases the fatigue resistance of steel and affects the ability of any structure to withstand loads over time. This is a great way of refining steel by incurring very little expense. While blowing air/Oxygen is used to remove Sulphur, Phosphorus is removed using calcined lime. It changes Phosphorus into Calcium Phosphate and makes it lighter than steel, which is then removed in the form of slag.

TMT steel increases the capacity of the structure to withstand more loads and is considered very safe and strong. Hence, for any long term use, it is a much more reliable option as compared to its counterparts despite the low TMT steel price. Further, sponge iron can be used to produce TMT steel as the impurities are easily removed at an effective cost. Additionally, TMT steel is very sturdy, which is why the amount required for any construction is much lesser when compared to other materials. Hence, it helps in reducing costs at the construction stage.
