Cold rolled steel sheets are widely used in various applications like home appliances, automobiles, furniture pieces for your home, and many more. This is because they offer a plethora of benefits that include a clean and smooth surface, the ability to meet a wide range of product standards, easy formability, etc. A cold-rolled steel sheet features these properties owing to the manufacturing used in steel plants. Mentioned below are the various processes used for manufacturing cold-rolled steel sheets:
Cold rolling
The cold rolling process is used to control the thickness of the cold-rolled steel sheets. Thanks to technological development, the strip thickness can be set using a computer to ensure accuracy. This way there are no chances of any error. The size of the strips is measured on both the entry and exit sides of the mill.
Cleaning
This method is more crucial for products that require a smooth and clean surface so that they can be painted. The cold rolling process is followed by annealing where rolling oil is burned off from the cold-rolled strip. Electrolytic cleaning is done before annealing so that various types of rolling oil can be removed.
Annealing
The annealing process is very significant as it determines the formability of the cold-rolled steel. When cold rolling is performed, the material gets very hard and its ductility reduces. The annealing process helps to improve the ductility by introducing a recrystallized structure in the steel. There are two types of annealing processes used by steel plants: the batch annealing process and the continuous annealing process.
Skin Pass Rolling
Once the annealed coils are prepared, they are lightly rolled in the skin pass mill. This process helps to prevent the chances of stretcher strain, improve the shape of the strip, and adjust its mechanical properties. The process is used for giving a dull or bright finish to products.
Finishing
Once the skin pass rolling process is over, if the coils have to be cut to produce product coils of a specific size, they are taken to the recoiling line. Similarly, if the coils have to be cut to sheets of a specific dimension, they are taken to the shearing line. Before declaring the products fit to use, all of their widths, thicknesses, sizes, shapes, and quality of surfaces are inspected. Also, the mechanical properties of the specimens taken from the finished products are tested.
