How Are Roofing Sheets Installed? The Process

The first step involved in roofing sheets installation is the selection of material that suits your requirements. Roofing sheets are available in many different sizes and shapes. Owing to the number of variants available, there is never one roofing solution that fits all purposes. Initially, roofing sheets were used by builders for commercial structures. However, the trend gradually shifted towards residential complexes with people understanding the relevance and benefits of pre-fabricated roofing solutions. Some of the popular roofing sheets include:

Corrugated Roofing Sheets:

Popular for their strength, corrugated roofing sheets are stronger when compared to other types of sheets, thanks to their shape. GI profile sheet is the base material for sheets covered by polyester paints or PVC plastisols. Polyester painted metal sheets are durable and are largely used in agricultural buildings while PVC plastisol-covered roofing sheets are durable as well as fade and scratch resistance.

Metal Roofing Sheets:

These are similar to corrugated roofing sheets but differ in terms of structure. They offer amazing roof coverage and are mostly used in garages and green buildings. These can be made with tin-plated steel or any other material. Available in many different colors, these are light yet durable. They let in a lot of light without adding additional weight to the structure. They can also be combined with light roof panels, depending on your roof’s layout.

Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets:

These are made up of lightweight yet tough, high impact polypropylene resin. Being pH neutral, these aren’t much affected by water, oil, or solvents. This makes them weather resistant. These are available in a wide range of finishes with features such as UV resistance, flames resistance, corrosion resistance, anti-static, static dissipative, and customized colors.

Once you have selected the variant that best suits your needs, the following are the steps that need to be taken to ensure a perfect installation:

Following is the process that needs to be followed while installing roofing sheets:

Cutting the roofing sheet

Most of the manufacturers sell roofing sheets that are pre-cut so you don’t have to do it. But if you prefer them uncut and wish to do it yourself, here are some of the things that you need to keep in mind:

Mark the layout with the help of a marker.

Make use of proper cutting tools such as angle grinder, circular saw, tip snips, or nibbler.

Refrain from using excessive heat as that can damage the coating and cause discoloration.

Remove the leftover swarf if any.

Laying Sheet

This is the trickiest part of getting the installation right. It involves properly aligning the sheet so that you don’t have to do it again.

Begin with cleaning the roof and taking care of old shingles.

After the sheets are cleaned, spread the sheets directly over the purlins. Always make sure to lay the sheet from the outside edge.

Screw the Panels

Appropriate roof fasteners must be used for screwing the panels. Keep a distance of at least 5.5 cm while lapping over the panels. Adjust the lap in a manner so that the last installed panel is enough and completes the layout without making any more lengthwise cuts.

Repeat the steps in case of a two-sided roof and install a ridge cap.
