Galvanized steel- a chosen material across industries

One may not be very familiar with the word ‘galvanized’ if you are not from the industry, but most of the steel we see around us, and just know it as ‘steel’ is actually galvanized steel. Right from the vehicle bodies to bicycles, to water pipes and more; all are made from galvanized steel. Even wires, tools, nuts and bolts are all galvanized as the process makes the steel corrosion resistant and increases the metal’s longevity. In fact, cold rolled sheets are also galvanized often to provide them the zinc protection.

Galvanizing steel is not a very expensive process and for the benefits it offers, it is totally worth it. This makes it a chosen material for an outdoor project or construction. So, most of the roofs, fences and outdoor walkways are made of galvanized metal.

Renewable energy industries – Galvanized steel is commonly used in the wind and solar industries. Once solar projects are installed, they need to have a continuous workflow; if frequent maintenance and any repairs are needed the service gets disrupted leading to a loss of revenue. Due to its corrosion resistant property and the ability to withstand harsh conditions and protect steel, hot-dipped galvanized steel is a popular solar steel. Apart from its long lasting feature, galvanized steel is environmentally friendly as they do not produce emissions.

Agriculture industry – galvanized steel is often utilized in the Agriculture industry as the machinery and equipment that is used is exposed to harsh conditions making it susceptible to corrosion, thus a more tough and resilient equipment made of galvanized steel provides the protection that is required, making it last for decades despite the external conditions it is subjected to.

Locomotive industry – to start off with the automotive industry only used galvanized steel for luxury models, this happeneduntil the 1980s. However, in today’s day and age zinc-coated bodies invehicleshave become the norm in this sector of manufacturing. 80% of the car’s body is made up of ‘body-in-white’ and this is all galvanized steel. Because of its anti- corrosive properties, auto industries often offer anti-rust warranties to their buyer, thus making it a great marketing tool as well.

Construction industry – Since galvanized steel is durable and robust it is widely used for both residential and commercial construction. Apart from the technical properties, it is also aesthetically preferred due to its shine, making it popular for contemporary architectural designs. Even relatively smaller structures use this steel due its properties such as in rails, tubing, fences, poles, gutters and more.

Telecom industry – Phone lines are quite difficult to maintain, they are tall making it cumbersome to reach. Hot-galvanized steel is popularly used in phone wiring as well as equipment boxes decreasing the damage risk and need for constant maintenance.

When it comes to buying steel, we must not compromise on the quality as steel sets the foundation for many structures. So be it hot rolled steel, solar steel, galvanized steel or if you need to buysteel for packaging and other purposes, make sure to choose a reliable, state of the art steel manufacturer such as JSW.
