The Extensive Use of Steel for Construction

Steel is one of the most important materials used for construction. From the roofs of a building to the cladding, steel is used everywhere. Steel is the primary material that supports the structure of the building and gives it the strength to stand strong. It bonds really well with concrete, hence providing strength to the structure. Steel is known for its durability and strength. It is an alloy of various metals, including iron and carbon. Steel has high tensile strength. No wonder that steel is an integral part of the construction industry!

Here are some types of steel that are majorly used for construction purposes.

1. Light gauge steel-

Light gauge steel is made from thin steel sheets, depending on particular standards.

When steel is made from a cold working process, it is cold deformed steel. This type of light gauge steel is easy to work with. For example, making steel frames is easier with cold deformed steel.

Light gauge steel is quite flexible and easy to work with. Joists and studs made of light gauge steel are readily available, thus making it quite handy.

Light gauge steel is used for flooring, cladding, composite panels, facades, and side railings.

2. Structural steel-

Structural steel is one of the most important types of steel for construction purposes. It is used to give base and structure to the building.

Structural steel comes in various specifications like channel sections, plate type, bar or rod-type, I-beam,  and T-Shaped. Structural steel can be transformed into any preferred shape.

To protect it from corrosion, it is better to have the steel coated with a layer of protective material. The most effective process is galvanization. Aerosol sprays could also be helpful.

Structural steel is environmentally quite friendly. It is also recyclable. A variety of designs can be easily worked upon structural steel. Structural steel is also fire resistant.

3. Mild steel-

Mild steel is plain carbon steel, the most commonly used steel during construction. It is generally referred to as carbon steel. It is known for its strength. It is used for modern pre-engineered constructions, as well as conventional buildings.

Mild steel is very flexible and is hence crack-resistant, making it the preferable type of steel for construction purposes. It is mostly similar to structural steel. It can also be easily welded.

Mild steel is capable of enduring calamities such as earthquakes.

4. Rebar steel-

Rebar steel is reinforcing steel. Rebar steel fixes well with the concrete giving the structure strength. It originates from carbon steel. It provides durability and stiffness to the structure. Resistance and strength are also attained with the help of rebar steel.

It is often used as a mesh of steel wires.

Rebar steel can be manufactured up to quite a long length.

Rebar steel includes hot rolled steel bars of carbon. Cold rolled steel also falls under this category.

Thus, steel forms the foundation of any building, big or small. These were few among the most important types of steel used for construction purposes in our country.
