The Manufacturing Process of TMT bars

The full form of the TMT bar or Thermo Mechanically Treated bar is broadly utilized for various construction projects. They have a soft inner and hard outer surface that makes them unique and demandable. Produced using high-strength steel, TMT bars have a few characteristics that make them the most favored material for different construction projects. With the increasing demand, the TMT bar manufacturers like JSW Neosteel are doing their best to fulfill the demand.

The Thermo Mechanical Treatment process can be categorized in 5 stages:

Extraction

Heating

Quenching

Self-tempering

Atmospheric cooling

Extraction-

Iron ore, coke, or flukes are used to separate iron that is kept in the liquid state. After this, molten iron is exposed to pre-treatment and converted over to steel in a converter and is then exposed to warming for refining the steel. Then, at that point, the liquid steel is filled into a casting machine to deliver billets.

Heating-

The steel billets are made by warming from 1200°C to 1250°C. The shape and size of the bar are a must before sending it to the milling stand.

Quenching-

To avoid phase transformation, quenching is done immediately after the final rolling. A sudden change in temperature hardens the external layer of the steel bar working on its rigidity and toughness.

Self-tempering-

The quenched material is then thrown into a heat flow of very high temperature to temper the outer later. The output of this structure is known as tempered martensite.

Atmospheric cooling-

After the self-tempering process, the bars are exposed to atmospheric cooling to level the temperature difference. When the bars are chilled off, the austenitic center gets changed into a malleable ferrite-pearlite structure.

Advantages of TMT bars:

High ductility, bending ability, and malleability (flexible).

Resistance to earthquakes because of their soft inner pearlite core.

Higher bonding strength makes this material fire resistant and provides safety.

Suitable for welding as they normally have low carbon.

Resistance to corrosion.

Less costly than other bars.

Applications:

The TMT bars are primarily used in building a major site. This is mainly preferred in earthquake regions because of its high seismic resistance. A few of the examples are:

Thermal power plants

Industrial structures

Hydropower plants

Dams

Flyovers

Bridges

The interest for cost-effective TMT bars of higher yield strength has gone up dramatically throughout the most recent couple of years. Various construction projects such as dams and bridges drive the market crazy across the globe. It provides such sustainability while being a low-cost material. Best TMT bars in India are manufactured at steel plants starting from getting the raw materials to making TMT bars. JSW Neosteel is one of the best suppliers and manufacturers of TMT bars and is known for its quality of bars and in-time delivery.
