Here are a few things you need to know about the TMT bars

What are TMT bars?

Thermo-mechanically treated bars which stand for TMT bars, are the most widely used construction. Whether it be marine, residency, or infrastructure, the building would seem absurd without using TMT bars. This is because the bars have a hardcore outer surface, while the inner surface is soft. This yields greater strength, toughness, and ductile nature of the bars. The dominant temp-core technology is used to manufacture the best TMT bars.

How are TMT bars manufactured?

The manufacturing process of TMT bars is quite straightforward. The raw iron ore is first treated to a hot gas, thus converting it into a molten state. The melted iron is processed and converted into liquid steel and billets. After the billets acquire the desired shape, the molten steel is converted into hardcore steel. The last step of the manufacturing process is the thermo-mechanical process.

It further involves three important processes: quenching, self-tempering, and atmospheric cooling. In quenching, the steel is suddenly cooled. Self-tempering makes the steel ductile, while atmospheric cooling lets the bar cool at atmospheric temperature. Austenitic, ferritic, and martensitic are iron's three allotropes that give TMT bars high tensile strength, flexibility, hardness, elasticity, and bendability.

Know the basic types of TMT bars:

Regarding TMT bars, different varieties cater to different needs and applications. Depending upon the use and applications, TMT bars are available in varieties such as grade FE-415, FE-415S, FE-415D, FE-500, FE-500S, FE-500D, FE-550D, FE-550, and FE-600. Every grade has its importance in different construction projects.

These special features of TMT bars make them special as compared to others:

Available in several grades.

High thermal resistance.

It is highly resistant to corrosion, dust, and rust to withstand the continuous flow of water.

Have excellent ductility, malleability, and weldability.

It can be worked with easily at construction sites.

Have high bonding and fatigue strength.

Have better elongation.

Satisfy all the BIS standards.

Resistant to fires up to 1000 degree Celsius and high impact resistant to immense force if applied.

Resistant to natural calamities such as earthquakes and bearing sudden stress load.

Heavy bonding capability.

Cost-efficient and more feasible as compared to other steel bars.

The reinforcement nature of the bars avoids cracks in the concrete.

Uses of TMT bars:

It is popularly used in concrete reinforcement structures such as dams, bridges, flyovers, hydel and thermal projects.

Industrial structures, multistoried buildings, underground structures such as metros, rapid transport systems, and underground tunnels also require TMT bars for construction.

It also finds its applications in constructing airports, ports, refineries, and stadiums.

TMT bars can be used to construct malls, schools, high-budget power plants, etc.

Commercial and office complexes, iconic structures, government offices, and private entities also need TMT bars.
