Metals Commonly Used in the Construction Industry

Metals used in the construction industry serve various significant functions. These metals have become an important part of the construction industry owing to features like durability, strength, and resistance to weather. Among all the types of metal, the most commonly used ones are carbon steel, aluminum, copper tubing, and stainless steel. Each of these types serves a specific purpose. Together, they play a significant role in the world of buildings and architecture.

Carbon steel

It is one alloy that is widely used in the construction industry owing to its sturdiness and strength. Typically, carbon steel is used for the construction of beams for structural framework, highway construction plates and rectangular tubing for welded frames trailer beds, and bridges. Also, this material is used for making rebar and hollow structural sections (HSS). This metal is manufactured by mixing carbon and iron together. Depending on the amount of carbon present in the metal, it is classified on a scale of “mild” to “very high,”.

Aluminum

Features like resistant to corrosion, highly conductive and ductile have made aluminium one of the most commonly used metal in the industry. This type of metal is used indoors and windows, and wire, as well as outdoor signage and street lights,  owing to its resistance to harsh weather. Processed into sheets, tubes, and castings, this metal is used for various purposes. Further, aluminium is used in the automobiles industry, as well as in bicycles and marine vessels.

Copper tubing

Copper tubing is used to construct pipes in buildings and comes in two main types. For hot and cold water pipes in houses and buildings, rigid copper tubing is considered the ideal material. On the other hand, soft copper is meant for making refrigerant lines in HVAC systems and heat pumps. What makes it further useful is that copper ductile is corrosion-resistant, both from water and soil. Further, it is recyclable as well. The aforementioned points make it ideal for piping and tubing.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is commonly used as it is corrosion and stain-resistant. Its intrinsic strength and durability are the reasons why it is used in architectural structures. It is an alloy made from different metals. The amounts can be adjusted according to the needs. A common grade of stainless steel that steel manufacturers in India provide is 301 that is ductile and easily welded. It is used for roofing, structural applications, handrails, etc.
